Signs of illness in dogs

As the owner, you are usually the first to notice when your dog shows symptoms of illness. These can be, for example, unusual behavior, reduced food intake or a change in appearance.

A possible illness symptom does not always have to be a disease, but attention is nevertheless advisable. Many illnesses initially manifest themselves with inconspicuous symptoms. If you then examine your dog more closely, you have a good chance of discovering signs of illness in good time and having them treated at an early stage.

Examine your dog regularly

It is best to always carry out the examination systematically and follow a familiar sequence. If you regularly check your pet for the following points, you will know its normal condition and can quickly identify any changes. In addition, your dog will already be used to the examinations and will be more willing to undergo them even if it is in pain.

Procedure for the examination

  1. What is the dog's posture, external appearance, how does it move?
  2. Are the ears, eyes, nose, mouth and their surroundings free of traces of secretions and impurities?
  3. Are the conjunctivae of the eye reddened? Is the pupil clear?
  4. If necessary, open the mouth with gentle pressure and check the color and blood circulation of the mucous membranes. Are there any swellings?
  5. Palpate the neck, chest and abdomen and look for lumps, swellings or changes in the coat.
  6. Is the abdominal wall tense and does the animal express pain when gentle pressure is applied?
  7. Also feel the limbs one after the other. Joint problems in particular manifest themselves in pain, swelling or warmth.
  8. Check the anal and genital area for redness, pain and impurities.
  9. You can use a commercially available clinical thermometer to check your body temperature rectally.

In the case of certain illnesses, water or food consumption is also altered. If you check these points regularly, you will soon get a feel for your dog and be able to give your vet valuable information in the event of illness.
