Dry nose in dogs

Written by Animonda | 19. January 2026

It is commonly said that a dog's nose should always be wet and cool. But don't worry: if a dog's nose is temporarily dry, this does not mean that the dog is ill. Below you can find out how a dog's nose works and the reasons for a dry nose in dogs.

How does a dog's nose work?

The nose is a dog's most important sensory organ. While we explore our environment primarily with our eyes, he sniffs it out with his nose. It provides him with extensive information. For example, dogs can use their smells to determine who has been on a dog run in the last few hours, whether a bitch is in heat, whether a dog is afraid or where a person has gone. The dog's ability to smell depends on the environment in the nose. A fluid is produced in the dog's nose so that it can smell well. Nevertheless, there are situations in which the dog's nose is dry.

5 reasons for a dry dog nose

1. dry air

We know this from ourselves: When the air is dry, it can happen that our lips are dry too. It is similar with dogs' noses: if the air in the room is particularly dry, it is quite possible that your dog's nose will be dry. The same can happen if the humidity outside is too low. We have no influence on this. In the home, however, we can help by using a humidifier. Regular ventilation is also recommended.

2. after sleeping

Here, too, we can draw a comparison with ourselves: After waking up, you first have to run your tongue over your lips to make them moist again. It's the same with dogs. He doesn't lick his nose when he sleeps, which is why it dries out on the outside. You don't need to worry about this. It can easily take five to ten minutes before it is moist again after waking up.

3. heat & sunburn

Dogs are only able to sweat to a limited extent. The best way for them to regulate their body temperature is by panting. However, this causes them to lose moisture, which can quickly lead to a dry nose. A dry nose is therefore not uncommon on hot days. However, care should be taken to ensure that the dog does not get sunburn on its nose. This is because a dog's nose can also get sunburnt. It is then not only dry, but also hot and reddened. It can even peel after a few days. For this reason, dogs should stay in the shade on hot days if possible. There is also special sun cream for dogs. It is also important that the dog always has enough water to drink.

4. lack of fluids

A lack of fluids can occur in a variety of situations. If the dog is particularly temperamentaland has hada strenuous activity, the nose may feel drier than usual. It can also become dehydrated if you forget to fill the water bowl or if you don't take a water bottle with you for longer outings. Don't forget tooffer your dogwater regularly during nose work or search games,as intensive breathing dries out the nose more quickly.

5. diseases

In most cases, a dog's dry nose is relatively easy to explain and the situation is either harmless or could easily have been avoided. However, sometimes a dry nose can also be a symptom of an illness. Pay attention to the dog's general condition. If it is not eating, has a fever or pain, or even seems exhausted, you should take the dog to a vet. It may turn out that the dog has an infection or is suffering from an allergy, for example, which can sometimes result in a dry nose. The dog may also be affected by a skin disease that is also noticeable on the nose.

Conclusion

In most cases, we don't even notice that our dogs occasionally have a dry nose. This happens regularly and is not normally a cause for concern. To prevent it, you should make sure that your dog has access to water around the clock. If you notice other symptoms in addition to a dry nose, you should consult a vet.
