Excess weight in cats

If cats weigh too much, it not only affects their enjoyment of life, it can also cause tangible health problems.

Being overweight (obesity) damages the joints, heart and circulation and can cause other diseases such as diabetes. Cat owners should therefore keep a watchful eye on their pet's slim figure.

Is the cat too fat?

Real affection is not shown by a constantly full food bowl, but by responsible interaction with the cat. This includes playtime and cuddles as well as the right amount of food. The first question is whether the animal is at its ideal weight. A vet's opinion is often helpful here. The rule of thumb is: If you can no longer feel your pet's ribs or can only feel them with difficulty, you have been too generous in the past. It is therefore high time to take countermeasures. Regular small steps are more promising than a radical diet.

How a cat loses weight

Three points ensure lasting success in weight control: firstly, the cat must consume less energy. A well-balanced reduced diet is recommended so that the cat's nutrient supply does not suffer.
Secondly, all additional morsels, e.g. rewards and snacks, should be eliminated or deducted from the daily ration of the reduced diet. Many treats are higher in calories than some people think.
Finally, it is very important to increase the animal's physical activity. This often refers to indoor cats, which get less exercise than outdoor cats. They can be encouraged with hunting games, as well as with a ceiling-high scratching post.
