Overweight in dogs

Written by Animonda | 19. January 2026

When dogs have extra pounds on their ribs, it not only affects their enjoyment of life, it can also cause health problems.

Being overweight (obesity) damages joints, heart and circulation and can cause other diseases such as diabetes. Pet owners should therefore keep a watchful eye on their dogs' slim line. Real affection is not shown by a constantly full food bowl, but by responsible handling of the animal. And this also includes extended playtime, exercise and - last but not least - the right food in the right quantity.

Is my dog too fat?

The first question to ask is whether the animal is at its ideal weight. An opinion from a professional, i.e. a vet, is often helpful here. The rule of thumb is: If you can no longer feel your dog's ribs or can only feel them with difficulty, you have been too generous in the past. It is therefore high time to take countermeasures. Regular small steps are more promising than a cure by force.

How the dog loses weight

Three points ensure lasting success in weight control:

  1. Firstly, the dog needs to consume less energy than was previously the case. A well-balanced reduction diet is recommended so that the nutrient supply does not suffer.
  2. Secondly, all additional morsels, e.g. rewards and snacks, should be temporarily removed ordeducted from the daily ration of the reduced diet. Treats are higher in calories than some people think.
  3. And finally, it is very important to increase your pet's physical activity. Dogs benefit from regular walks, play and dog sports activities.
