Make your own cat fishing rod toy

Cats love it when their owners play with them - for example with a cat fishing rod. This is very easy to make yourself. All you need is a wooden stick, wool, cardboard, pencil and scissors. Our instructions explain the best way to do this.

Joint activities bring people together

Not only kittens love to play, but also most adult animals. Playing together with your cat strengthens the bond and trust between pet and owner. They are also good for body and mind. An underemployed cat can quickly put on a few extra grams or develop behavioral problems. This increases the risk of illness and reduces life expectancy. It is therefore important to provide cats with enough opportunities to play.

To some extent, cats can keep themselves occupied, but for some games, humans are required. This applies, for example, to playing with a cat fishing rod. For many cats, this is one of their favorite pastimes. Countless times they are ready to sneak up and pounce on it. It is important to remember that success is part of the fun. It is frustrating in the long run if the feathers or bobble are always pulled away so quickly that the cat has no chance of getting hold of them. The game should be balanced and ultimately the cat should leave the field as a successful hunter.

What do I need to make a cat fishing rod?

A cat fishing rod can be made from many different materials. You can get a suitable branch outside or buy a ready-made round stick. You can use wool, a thick cord or a leather band as a connection. You can attach a woolen pompom to the front or feathers, a leather tassel or a toy mouse. All options are open to you. Our instructions describe a cat fishing rod made from a wooden stick with a pom-pom.

Material for the cat fishing rod:

  • Round stick (30 to 50 cm)
  • Wool (one or more colors)
  • cardboard
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • Compasses if necessary

Crafting instructions for our cat fishing rod

  1. Depending on the desired size of the pom-pom, draw two interlocking circles on a piece of cardboard. Either freehand, with a compass or two suitable objects. In our example, the inner circle has a diameter of 1.5 cm and the outer circle 3 cm.
  2. Cut out the inner and outer circles and make a second cardboard ring of the same size and place it over the other.
  3. Cut several strands of wool and lay them next to each other. Choose only one color or several, depending on your preference. Wrap the threads tightly around the ring and tuck the end under.
  4. Cut the wool around the sides.
  5. Wrap a doubled wool thread several times between the cardboard rings and knot tightly.
  6. Cut open the cardboard rings and remove them from the pom-pom.
  7. Use the scissors to make a small notch one to two centimeters from one end of the wooden stick.
  8. Cut the wool threads of the wrapped pom-pom to the desired length and attach them to the round stick.
  9. Done - have fun!
