Appearance and character of the Siamese cat

The Siamese cat is an extremely noble cat breed of medium size. It has a strikingly slender build. Its long legs give it an elegant and supple gait. They are characterized by their blue eyes and special coat markings. However, this is not yet visible in kittens. They are all born with a light coat, but over time their face, ears, tail and paws become darker and darker. The typical points develop, which can have the colors blue, lilac, seal or chocolate. This coat pattern is caused by partial albinism, which is the result of a genetic mutation.

The Siamese is a very social breed that is people-oriented and affectionate. As soon as it loses sight of you, you should expect it to come around the corner the next moment. Siamese cats are very communicative and talkative. If it doesn't like something, it will comment on it loudly. This could include, for example, having to be left alone for too long, being overdue for a feed or not getting enough attention. The intelligent and slightly sensitive Siamese cat does not like such things at all.

Keeping and care

Sociable Siamese cats love to have someone around at all times. They feel particularly comfortable when they have a suitable conspecific by their side with whom they can play. But their human family members are just as important to them. They need a lot of attention and don't want to spend half the day alone in the apartment. As the Siamese cat is a particularly intelligent and active breed, it needs plenty of exercise and activity. A varied scratching post, all kinds of toys and scented cushions are ideal. If a balcony is available, they would certainly enjoy using it. They are usually kept as indoor cats, but outdoor access is not ruled out.

As Siamese cats have a short, fine coat with almost no undercoat, they are very easy to care for. It is sufficient to run a thin comb through the coat occasionally. It is good to know that the coat offers little protection against the cold. That's why they love a cuddly den and a place to sleep near a heater during the cold season. They are not a typical cat for allergy sufferers, but due to the lack of undercoat, they could certainly be considered.

Nutrition

Whether kitten, adult cat or senior - the food for a Siamese cat should always be of high quality and adapted to its age. Cats are carnivores by nature, so the cat food should contain a high proportion of meaty ingredients. Sugar, flavor enhancers and artificial colors and preservatives should not be added to the food.

Health

Siamese cats have a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years. This shows that the breed is healthy and robust. Nevertheless, they are not spared diseases. These include, for example, occasional squinting and eye tremors. Vets suspect that a melanin deficiency could be the cause, which is linked to the partial albinism of this cat breed. This first leads to night blindness and can lead to complete blindness.

Hereditary diseases also include metabolic problems, chronic renal insufficiency and liver insufficiency, as well as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is a heart disease in which the heart muscle becomes thickened.

History and breeding

The Siamese cat originates from Thailand. They are said to have been kept by Buddhist monks at the royal court and in temples as early as the 14th century. There they were revered as temple guardians who were supposed to look after the treasures and take in the souls of the deceased. For centuries, the export of the breed was banned. It was not until 1884 that the then king presented a British consul general with a pair on his return to England. The pair were named Mia and Pho and are the origin of European breeding. This was not easy due to the small number of animals, but the English were very committed. In 1892, they drew up the first breed standard and ensured that the popularity of the Siamese increased rapidly at shows. It has also been bred in Germany since 1927. Today it is known all over the world and is considered one of the most popular cat breeds.
